As someone new to solo RPGs, I picked up a copy of Four Against Darkness (4AD), and it definitely delivers on its promise of old-school dungeon-crawling fun—though it’s not for everyone.⁣⁣⁣

• 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐨-𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 – Designed specifically for solo play, with no DM needed.⁣⁣⁣
• 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – Procedural dungeon generation means no two adventures are the same.⁣⁣⁣
• 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬-𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 & 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 – Simple mechanics make it easy to jump in, even if you’re new to RPGs.⁣⁣⁣

• 𝐋𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞-𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 – If you don’t enjoy tracking stats, maps, and encounters, it might feel tedious.⁣⁣⁣
• 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 – The mechanics work, but they aren’t as deep as some board game dungeon crawlers.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Overall, Four Against Darkness is a fantastic pen-and-paper dungeon crawl that’s perfect for players who love rolling dice, drawing maps, and creating their own stories. If you enjoy OSR-style adventures and don’t mind filling in the blanks, you’ll love it. But if you prefer structured narratives and tactical combat, you might find it lacking.⁣⁣⁣
