Who is JBIVWriting?

Hey everyone, I'm Joe!

The writing bug bit me early, and since my childhood I have loved adventure! I remember always writing something about whatever my passion was at the time (Soccer, basketball, piano, Lord of the Rings etc...) and that paved the way for where I am today! A self-published or, Indie Author!

Sometimes it feels like I have "tried it all" as an author. I've written short stories, and poetry, had a blog, published articles in newspapers, and started writing more books without finishing them than I would like to admit! But through all the writing I have done, the essence of my writing always came back to one story, and that was Falduen.

During my time at Southern Virginia University, I was able to take many creative writing classes and come up with SO many worlds and other stories. The world of The Shineden (though Falduen was a character I came up with when I was much younger) really began to take shape as I developed my writing ability and truly my love for telling stories, while I was there.

I have been an English teacher at two different schools, for four different grades, and loved everything all those kids taught me! I owe The Shineden to a lot of the encouragement that they all gave me after we would read through what I had in class, they all demanded I finish it, and I finally did!

I hope that you enjoy the stories that I share, If nothing else, I hope that my stories and worlds can give you somewhere to escape from the craziness of the world we live in, even if only for a few minutes. That's why I write. It opens up our minds to locations and characters that we can connect with,, while DISconnecting from the crazy around us.

Snippet from The Shineden, Chapter 8

Falduen and Thomas

Whatever liquid it was, it wasn’t water. It was warm and smooth, with a slightly sweet taste to it. Falduen drank as much as he could before feeling like he had had too much and holding up one hand he signaled to Thomas that he was finished.

“What is that?” He asked after swallowing his last gulp. “I’ve never had anything like that before.” Looking around him again, some of the finer details of everything started to slowly fade, restoring his vision closer to what it had been before, his smell and hearing gradually doing the same.

“This?” Thomas pulled the liquid away holding it in a patch of sunlight. “This is what keeps us all sane. You in particular, it brings you back to a state of comfort and normality. Eventually, once you have trained and built up a little more tolerance you won’t need as much if any.” Thomas stood, then pulled Falduen up to his feet as well.

“Why me specifically? It doesn’t do the same for you?” Falduen looked at him with confusion and desperation in his eyes. He missed his mother, he still didn’t understand what had happened or where he was, he just wanted to rest and find answers to the many questions that he had. All these thoughts started to build up in his mind causing what felt like a massive lump to push at the outer limits of his head. His limbs became itchy and hot as he became more agitated and anxious.

“Oh it does the same for me, but my senses are so dulled and minute compared to yours that it doesn't really do all that much.” Thomas placed a hand on Falduen’s shoulder before he turned away seemingly to walk away from their campsite. “Now, we need to get going as soon as you’re able. We’ve got quite a long way ahead of us but if we travel quickly we’ll get there soo..”

“ENOUGH!” Falduen cut Thomas off pulling away from his grasp, finally snapping, just wanting answers to his many questions. “I don’t understand what is happening! I have no idea who you even are, where my mother is, where we are. How do I even know that I can trust you?”

Sneak Peek of Book 2: Punalsi

Falduen and Ister

As soon as the last word had ended, a massive roar came from the woods and pierced through the sky. They both turned to see a massive black dragon flying over the trees, with a rider on its back holding a shining sword high above their head.

Falduen, we have no time for training. We fly to glory and to freedom as the Shineden of old!” Ister turned and lowered his shoulder allowing Falduen to quickly leap onto his back while giving Falduen what quick information he could. A dragon’s weakest points are their eyes and the joints where their front legs attach to their stomachs. Now ready your bow!” Ister leapt from the ground and let out a screech of his own in the direction of the fast-approaching dragon.

Falduen felt his breath catch in his throat as he realized he had no time to think of training, no chance to prepare for what was about to happen, all he could do was hold tight with his legs, and trust that Ister would fly well enough to not drop him. With one lengthened breath, he readied himself by pulling the bow from across his back and notching an arrow firmly on the string. No sooner had he done this than he felt a movement in his pocket as the stones began to act independently.

They shot out of his pocket, now shining, bright red, in the sunlight, and soared in the air until they were around the wrist of his hand that would be pulling back the bow string. There seemed to be a shimmer of light holding each stone to each other as they began to spin around Falduen’s wrist.

He had become so focused on the stones that he nearly forgot about the present danger until the dragon let out another roar. This time it ripped through the air and flames flew from its mouth as the sound faded.

Falduen and Ister could feel the heat from the flames even at the distance that still remained between the two riders.

Falduen, those stones will guide your hand. Trust in yourself, the orb, the stones, and me, and we will send these cowards back to the abyss where they belong!

Falduen had not heard this tone from Ister yet and it filled him with confidence. As they continued to hover, high above the ground watching the dragon and rider getting ever nearer, Falduen began to draw back the bow string. He could feel an energy coming from the stones as he placed his hand close to his cheek and stared down the shaft of the arrow, doing his best to pick his target while the dragon began to increase its speed towards them.

Taking a deep breath, Falduen fully drew back the string until there was no slack left and whispered to himself.

Letharta Corno, Ardante. Freedom Always, Forever. I will find you, father.
